Coppice Products : from sustainably managed coppiced woodland in Hampshire

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEWS: 02/02/2025 - UPDATE - Not taking on any further orders now. Apologies.
Due to high demand, my order book is now full and I will be focussing on fulfilling all current orders only. This will take me well into summer 2025. Apologies if you've come here looking to place an order. I can suggest trying www.coppice-products.co.uk to find other local coppice workers, or try your local coppice group.

I 'might' be able to assist with a few local orders of hazel sundries, beanpoles, plant supports etc, as I process through the remaining hazel, but all hazel stakes and binders (for hedgelaying etc) are spoken for as of now.

Prices:
I am having to monitor the current prices carefully, given the current economic situation. Whilst I will make every effort to keep my prices low, I may have to increase prices directly in line with expenses accordingly. Thank you.

Coppicing is a seasonal activity, cutting is done in the winter months so to best ensure availability it is worth planning those summer projects well in advance and ordering larger requests (eg 300 hazel rods for weaving or 50m of post and rail chestnut) during the winter months. I hold as much stock as I can into the summer but often run short, focusing then on the pergola builds and other calendar booked projects.

It is worth mentioning here that if you are much further afield than Hampshire, I'd suggest looking at http://coppice-products.co.uk/ in order to help you get in touch with a more local coppice worker or green woodworker.

Cleft Chestnut Picket Fencing

Sweet chestnut picket fencing can make a great boundary, whether it's for a vegetable garden (shown left 2ft high) or larger. The cleft pickets are attached to rails and can be purchased in sections or assembled to order, poa (usually starts at £40 per 6ft wide bay at 2ft high (basic cleft) -> £70 at 4ft for example) panels can be made up to be fixed to posts, often works well with coachscrews. Can also be set as mortise and tenon arrangement.

Firewood
I have decided NOT to sign up to the Woodsure scheme (it's simply too expensive for me to continue to supply under the 'ready to burn' scheme at the levels I was  - I use excess from the coppiced wood, I don't cut to produce firewood)
That said I AM allowed under the new legislation to supply minimum loads sizes of 2 cubic metres+ and hand you a document which informs you how to season the wood yourself.  So from now on I'll be servicing a limited client base with 2cubic metre+ deliveries of unseasoned/part seasoned/seasoned (when I get organised enough to hold  seasoning stacks at my new location).
None of the wood I sell for 'firewood' is legally 'ready to burn', it is intended to support people who are able to season and rotate their own stacks etc.

Sweet chestnut double load (~2cubic metre loose load)
£150 (unseasoned fresh from that years work -NOT ready to burn at all, ready to stack and season and monitor)
£170 (part seasoned from previous years work -NOT necessarily ready to burn, requires finishing and monitoring)
£190 ( 2 yr seasoned if available) - basically seasoned, still not Woodsure approved, not 'ready to burn', but likely to be once assessed/moisture meter checked closely ie <20%)

Sweet Chestnut wood is more suitable for log burners, it is not ideal for open fires as it has a tendency to spit and throw embers somewhat. It can take up to 24 months in ideal conditions to thoroughly dry off to a point where you would consider burning it as a fuel.

Delivered (truck and trailer (please consider access/turning)) and dropped within 20mile radius of PO9 or GU31 +£1 for every mile over 20 (up to my discretion)

  • Bags of chestnut shavings available £5, fantastic for getting the fire lit! larger quantities sometimes available. Only available in addition to orders of 2cubic metres+ of split logs.

For the most part my chestnut firewood is seasoned in the woods and split by hand using a maul, because of this I believe my pricing is incredibly competitive, this also means I only have a finite amount for sale each year so it is worth planning ahead and ordering early (summer time for following winter) to avoid disappointment!

It is worth noting that sweet chestnut makes an excellent firewood when properly seasoned but is best used in stoves and log burners because it has a tendency to spit and throw embers.
